Experts mention another problem when returning to offices that have been closed for months: Legionnella

September is approaching and, with it, the return to work of millions of people, who see with uncertainty what will happen and how the coronavirus pandemic will transform.

Meanwhile, in the United States there are experts who are already warning that office buildings that had been closed for months may harbor dangers other than COVID-19.

As The New York Times reports, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the nation’s most important public health agency, has already realized that they are not immune to the consequences of the coronavirus.

The CDC has advised its employees of some office spaces in Atlanta that would be closing again after building managers discovered Legionella in water sources. Despite this, no employee has been ill so far.

The CDC is having to deal with this problem, which can be very difficult to prevent. The body explains that Legionnaires’ disease, a respiratory condition, can be fatal.

Some experts have been warning of the risk of legionella outbreaks for weeks as people return to buildings that have been unoccupied for months by lockdowns.

The bacteria that cause the disease, Legionella pneumophila, can form in warm, standing water that is not properly disinfected. When sinks are opened or toilets are flushed, bacteria can get into the air and be inhaled.

Until now, research has focused on the increase of this bacteria during weekends and short vacation periods, so scientists are beginning to study how Legionella proliferates during long periods of stagnation and which methods are most effective for protect yourself against it.
